Probiotics means “for life.” They are “friendly” bacteria or flora in the digestive tract and are considered beneficial to health. There are several thousand billion in each person (more than all the cells in the body) and include over 400 species.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is predominantly in the small intestine. It helps reduce the levels of harmful bacteria and yeasts in the small intestine. Another function is the production of lactase, an enzyme important in the digestion of milk. Acidophilus is also involved in the production of B vitamins such as niacin, folic acid, and pyridoxine.
Bifidobacterium bifidum and B. longum are the main friendly bacteria in the large intestine. These friendly bacteria offer protection from invading bacteria and yeasts. They also manufacture B vitamins and help the body detoxify bile. There are many benefits of probiotics that include improved digestion, enhanced immune system activity, anticarcinogenic effect, reduction of high cholesterol & general protection.
